The work of TAGT depends on members who are willing to lead. The TAGT Board of Directors plays a critical role in guiding priorities, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and advancing advocacy for gifted educators. Applications and nominations for the 2027–2028 Board of Directors are closed.
Serving on the Board offers more than governance experience. It provides the opportunity to collaborate with dedicated professionals across Texas, strengthen leadership capacity, and shape initiatives that impact educators and students statewide. If you know someone who would make a strong strategic leader, or if you are ready to step into service yourself, consider submitting a nomination or application. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the gifted community statewide.
If you have any questions, please contact TAGT Executive Director Paulina van Eeden Hill.

2027–2028 Term (January 2027–December 2028)
Any TAGT Member (Educator, Leader, or Collaborator member) in good standing is eligible for Board service. To qualify for an officer position, members must have served at least one year on the Board of Directors.
Each officer and board position, excluding the President-Elect, serves a two-year term. Board members in good standing may serve a second 2-year term but cannot serve more than two, 2-year terms in the same position.
The President track is a four-year total commitment: President-Elect (1 year), President (2 years), and Immediate Past President (1 year), each with a one-year term limit. A President-Elect will be elected in even-numbered years and begin service in odd-numbered years.
Only one person from a district/organization is eligible to serve on the board at a time.
The Leadership Development Committee (LDC) will review all applications. Based on a needs assessment, candidate application, and, for selected candidates, an interview, the LDC will prepare a recommended slate of nominees based on experience, background, and geographic diversity. The recommended slate will be approved by the Board of Directors and distributed to TAGT membership.
In accordance with the TAGT Elections Procedures, after the slate is announced, any TAGT Member (Educator, Leader, or Collaborator member) in good standing may declare themself a candidate for an open position on the TAGT Board before the process is finalized. More information will be posted after slate is announced.
The Board of Directors will be installed at giftED26 and will begin service in January 2027.
Nominations will close on April 6, and all applications are due by April 15.
To prepare your application, you will be asked to submit your current resume and a recent headshot. You will also be asked to answer the following questions (500 words or less):
For President-Elect only:
The TAGT Board is the governing body of the association and as such, sets strategic policy, provides general oversight and actively pursues association goals.
TAGT strives for a Board that includes individuals who reflect the diversity of its membership. This includes consideration of leadership qualities, experience, background, and areas of expertise. The Board reflects various geographical backrounds and stakeholder groups in gifted education.
All member types (excluding eSubscribers) are eligible to apply for the Board. Board members must hold and maintain an active TAGT Membership in the association for the length of service.
There are four (4) formal Board meetings each year, generally held on a quarterly basis. The Board meets in January/February (Leadership Retreat/Orientation), in May/June, in September, and in November/December (in conjunction with giftED, the TAGT Annual Conference). Meetings are typically one or two-day commitments.
TAGT Bylaws specify that current, active TAGT membership is a minimum requirement to be considered for board service. To be eligible for Officer positions, you must have served on the Board for at least one year. With limited Board positions, TAGT Board selection is competitive and prior involvement and participation in TAGT activities is valued.
TAGT will reimburse expenses incurred for the official conduct of TAGT business related to scheduled and called meetings of the TAGT Board and selected/approved committee volunteer work. As an alternative to reimbursement, volunteer leaders may choose to log their expenses and use as a charitable tax deduction on their personal income tax filing, as TAGT is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. If volunteer leadership service is supported by a school district or company, TAGT appreciates expenses being deferred back to the employer, when applicable.
Although board members must be willing to invest time in preparing for and thoughtfully participating in board meetings, the time commitment is not onerous. The TAGT Board meets in person quarterly for approximately 8 hours. These meetings may take place in one day or over a two-day period usually on Friday and/or Saturday. Additional obligations include a Leadership retreat held in January/February, attendance at the giftED, the TAGT Annual Conference, and committee meetings held in person in conjunction with other TAGT events or virtually.
Any qualifying member in good standing, who meets the board service requirements, may apply for Board service by completing the online application form once open. Additionally, TAGT members may nominate others who they believe would be an asset to the Board. These nominees will also be asked to complete the Board application if interested.
By policy, the TAGT Leadership Development Committee (LDC) is charged with the task of thoroughly reviewing all applications and recommending a slate of nominees which reflect geographic diversity and a range of experience and background based on a needs assessment. The LDC shall prepare a slate of nominees for Officers and At-Large Board Members and present that slate to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will then present that slate to the membership. If no office or position is contested by self-declared individuals, at the close of the posted time, the election will be deemed closed. The nominated slate will be accepted as duly elected by consensus of the voting members if no office or position is contested.
Previous TAGT Board members have attested to the tremendous value of board service, reporting significant professional and personal benefits, including the opportunity to meet, work with, and learn from industry leaders; the chance to share their own knowledge, expertise, and training with others; professional recognition that elevates their stature within the education community at large; valuable work experience that opens the door to new career opportunities; and relationships with new friends and life-long mentors.
